The United States has deployed F-35 jets to Puerto Rico as part of a broader military push targeting drug cartels in Venezuela. Officials confirmed that ten F-35 jets are stationed to support anti-narcotics operations.
The deployment coincides with a major naval build-up in the southern Caribbean, including seven warships, 4,500 troops, and a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine. Washington describes the actions as efforts to curb drug trafficking but also as a strategic signal to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
CNN reported that the Trump administration is considering direct strikes on drug trafficking groups operating inside Venezuela. This escalation comes after US forces destroyed a speedboat linked to the Venezuelan group Tren de Aragua, killing eleven people. Caracas condemned the action as an βextrajudicial killing,β while legal experts questioned its legitimacy under international law.
Venezuelan President Maduro urged the US to abandon plans for military intervention. βI respect Trump. None of our differences should lead to conflict,β he said. However, Maduro has mobilized Venezuelaβs 340,000-strong armed forces, militia members, and reservists, claiming total personnel exceed eight million. He warned that any attack would trigger immediate armed resistance.
Tensions escalated further when two Venezuelan F-16 jets approached the USS Jason Dunham, a guided-missile destroyer. The Pentagon called the move βhighly provocative.β President Trump warned that any Venezuelan aircraft threatening US naval forces would be shot down. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported the hardline approach, emphasizing decisive action against cartels tied to Venezuela.
The F-35 jets deployment highlights the US commitment to intensifying operations in the Caribbean. Analysts warn that the move could increase the risk of direct confrontation in the region, with Caracas responding aggressively.
Experts suggest that while the F-35 jets enhance US operational capabilities, the situation remains volatile, and diplomatic channels are crucial to prevent full-scale escalation. The coming days are expected to test US-Venezuelan relations and the stability of the Caribbean region.
The F-35 jets are now a central part of the US strategy, signaling readiness for both anti-drug missions and potential defensive or offensive actions if tensions rise further.
