Air India pilot has been removed from duty after one of the airline’s domestic flights briefly entered Pakistani airspace during its approach to Amritsar Airport. The incident has led to disciplinary action and an official investigation by India’s aviation authorities.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place on the night of June 22. Air India flight AI479 was operating from Delhi to Amritsar when it encountered unexpected delays before landing.
Authorities said another aircraft had reported a bird strike shortly before the flight’s arrival. As a result, airport officials began inspecting the runway to ensure it was safe for operations. During this period, incoming aircraft were instructed to remain in the air until the inspections were completed.
While waiting for clearance to land, the Air India aircraft was carrying out a radar-guided approach. During this process, it unintentionally crossed into Pakistani airspace for a short time. Reports said the aircraft travelled approximately three miles inside Pakistani territory before the situation was corrected.
Pakistani air traffic control officials were immediately informed about the brief airspace entry. After coordination between both sides, the aircraft safely returned to Indian airspace without any further complications.
The flight initially attempted to land at Amritsar Airport after returning. However, because of low fuel caused by the extended holding time, the aircraft was diverted to Delhi, where it landed safely without any injuries or damage.
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the flight crew. The pilot involved has been removed from active flying duties while the investigation continues.
The regulator also took action against an air traffic controller at Amritsar Airport. Officials said the controller failed to report the incident to higher authorities within the required timeframe.
In a statement, Air India acknowledged that the aircraft made a minor and brief incursion into Pakistani airspace during the landing phase. The airline said all relevant aviation authorities were informed immediately after the incident.
The airline further stated that it has launched an internal investigation to determine how the incident occurred and whether additional safety measures are needed to prevent similar situations in the future.

The incident comes at a time when airspace operations between Pakistan and India remain highly sensitive. Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airlines following diplomatic tensions in April last year. Since then, flight operations involving both countries have continued under strict restrictions, making any unintended airspace entry a matter of serious regulatory concern.
