Bhati Gate Tragedy in Lahore: Husband Alleges Police Brutality Amid Investigation

The Bhati Gate tragedy in Lahore has taken a disturbing turn as the husband of the deceased woman, Ghulam Murtaza, has alleged police brutality. He claims he was tortured and intimidated while mourning the deaths of his wife, Sadia, and their young daughter.

According to Murtaza, the loss of his family was worsened by the conduct of Punjab Police officials. He alleges that police subjected him to physical violence and mental harassment instead of helping him seek justice.

Beatings and Forced Confession

Ghulam Murtaza said he was repeatedly beaten and threatened. He claims police pressured him to falsely confess to murdering his wife and daughter. He specifically named SP Bilal and SHO Zain Abbas as key figures in the alleged torture.

He described the ordeal as a second tragedy, saying, โ€œTwo doomsdays fell upon me โ€” the death of my loved ones and the suffering caused by the police.โ€ Marks of alleged torture, he said, remain visible on his body.

Standing Firm Amid Pressure

Despite the alleged abuse, Murtaza refused to confess to a crime he did not commit. He warned officials that injustice would not go unanswered and said he remained determined to reveal the truth.

His statements have sparked public outrage and intensified demands for an impartial investigation into the Bhati Gate tragedy and the conduct of police officers. Human rights advocates have called for accountability, stating that if the allegations are proven, they represent a serious abuse of power.

Inquiry Report and Findings

Meanwhile, a high-powered police committee completed its investigation into the incident. The three-member committee, formed by the Punjab Inspector General of Police, visited the scene and recorded statements from witnesses and the deceasedโ€™s family.

The report found negligence on the part of SP City, SDPO, and the SHO. All three officers were declared guilty of negligence. It also confirmed that Murtaza was allegedly tortured in the SHOโ€™s retiring room in the presence of SP City.

The findings have intensified calls for justice and reinforced concerns over police conduct in Lahore. Citizens and human rights groups continue to demand a transparent and fair resolution.
