KARACHI – Tragedy struck Gulshan-e-Iqbal near NIPA Chowrangi when three-year-old Ibrahim died after falling into an open manhole. His body was later recovered by a garbage-collecting boy, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident occurred when Ibrahim’s parents, visiting a private mart from Shah Faisal area, stepped out for shopping. The boy slipped from his mother’s hand and ran toward his father’s motorcycle, where he fell into the uncovered manhole.
A heartbreaking video of Ibrahim’s mother, Ayesha, pleading for help went viral on social media. Despite the urgency, government authorities arrived hours later, prompting locals and the parents to take matters into their own hands. They hired a welder to begin excavation work, as the official rescue efforts were slow to respond.
After a grueling 15-hour search, Ibrahim’s body was finally discovered—not with modern machinery or trained rescue personnel—but by a young garbage collector named Tanveer. He found the body in a drain near a private university close to NIPA Chowrangi and handed it over to the authorities.
Eyewitnesses reported that police allegedly mistreated Tanveer during questioning, while rescue volunteers also argued with him at the scene. Public outrage over the treatment of the boy grew quickly, with many praising his bravery.
Following widespread criticism, DSP Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town officially summoned Tanveer, praised his heroic act, and apologized for the behavior of the officials. Social media users and local residents have hailed Tanveer as a hero, emphasizing the urgent need for safer urban infrastructure and accountability for the officials responsible.
The tragic death of Ibrahim highlights ongoing issues with uncovered manholes in Karachi. Residents are calling for immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future. Authorities have been urged to improve public safety measures and ensure that open manholes are properly secured to protect citizens, especially children.
