Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a new plan to provide electric motorcycles to government employees up to BPS-16. The initiative will be offered through an easy-installment system.
The decision was shared during a high-level meeting in Islamabad. The meeting focused on promoting electric vehicles and reducing fuel dependency in Pakistan.
Officials said the easy-installment model will help government employees afford electric motorcycles without financial pressure. The goal is to make clean transport more accessible.
The government is also planning a major shift in the transport sector. Around 30 percent of vehicles in Pakistan are expected to convert to electric power within five years. This plan aims to reduce fuel imports and support economic stability.
Authorities estimate that the transition could save nearly $4.5 billion in import costs. The easy-installment scheme is seen as a key step toward encouraging adoption among public sector workers.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed departments to speed up work on the electric vehicle policy. He stressed the need for transparency in subsidy distribution under the National Electric Vehicle plan.
He also highlighted environmental concerns. According to him, electric transport will help reduce pollution and improve energy security in the country.
Officials informed the meeting that progress is already underway. So far, 72 licenses have been issued for manufacturing electric motorcycles and rickshaws. Four licenses have also been granted for electric cars.
In addition, 123 applications have been submitted for setting up EV charging stations across Pakistan. This shows growing interest in the sector.
The government believes the easy-installment system will play an important role in increasing demand. It is expected to support both employees and local manufacturers.
Officials say the initiative will also encourage wider use of electric transport in urban areas. This could help reduce fuel consumption and improve air quality.
The easy-installment program is part of a broader national strategy to modernize transport. It also aims to support sustainable development and reduce reliance on imported energy.
Authorities will continue working on expanding the EV infrastructure. More updates are expected as the rollout progresses in the coming months.
