Ex-Pakistani Cricketer Joins Betting App Campaign, Featuring Mia Khalifa in Other Ads

Despite Pakistan’s stringent ban on surrogate advertising for betting app companies, former cricket legend and all-time leading wicket-taker Wasim Akram has stirred controversy by becoming the brand ambassador for the India-based betting platform Baji.

This partnership has raised legal and ethical concerns regarding such promotions within Pakistan.

Baji, a prominent sports betting company, has also brought on board other well-known figures, including former adult actress Mia Khalifa, English cricket star Kevin Pietersen, and former Argentinian footballer Gabriel Batistuta, forming a high-profile team to expand the company’s presence in various markets.

Recently, Akram took to social media to promote the campaign, sharing a video featuring Baji’s logo. He captioned it:

“Join me at Baji for some serious fun and excitement. Let’s enjoy the thrill and create lasting memories together! I can’t wait to share this journey with you! … Win like a King!”

In another post, the former Pakistan captain alluded to his enduring presence in the sports arena, stating:

“I’ve had many unforgettable moments in cricket, but the real achievement is creating something that lasts. Join me at … and be part of the journey.”

Meanwhile, the betting company app featured several celebrities in its campaign by releasing promotional posters that include Mia Khalifa.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding surrogate companies linked to betting houses, urging stakeholders to avoid promoting these entities through advertisements during live sports broadcasts.

Additionally, the ministry warned all relevant departments, media outlets, and companies against entering into agreements with such entities.
