ISPR DG Highlights Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Progress, Warns of Regional Threats

Director General ISPR, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, on Tuesday stated that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the worst-affected province by terrorism. He attributed the high number of attacks to a “political-criminal-terror nexus” and a politically favorable environment for militants.

Speaking at a press briefing, the ISPR DG said the session aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s counter-terrorism measures over the past year. He emphasized that terrorism remains a serious challenge, but the nation stands united in combating it. “The war against terrorism is the war of the entire nation,” he said, noting that terrorists have no connection with Islam.

According to the ISPR DG, nearly 71% of terrorist incidents nationwide occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He warned that politically conducive conditions and criminal-terror linkages in the province have emboldened militant groups. Lt Gen Chaudhry stressed that terrorism is a national issue requiring political consensus and coordinated efforts across all provinces.

Highlighting Pakistan’s counter-terrorism operations in 2025, the ISPR DG said law enforcement agencies conducted 75,175 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the country. He shared key figures: 14,658 operations in KP with 16 suicide bombings, 58,778 in Balochistan, and 1,739 in other regions. He added that 5,397 terrorist incidents occurred nationwide, including 27 suicide attacks, resulting in 1,235 martyrs.

Lt Gen Chaudhry praised nationwide alignment on the National Action Plan, stating that Pakistan’s firm stance against terrorism has received global recognition. He warned that Afghanistan, following the Taliban takeover in 2021, has become a safe haven for militant groups. The ISPR DG highlighted that global terrorist outfits, including Al-Qaeda, ISIS, TTP, and BLA, continue to operate from Afghan soil, alongside other regional groups targeting Central Asia and China.

The ISPR chief also raised concerns over terror financing, revealing that militants receive around $7.2 million, along with bulletproof jackets and equipment, which strengthens their operational capacity. He added that the Afghan Taliban facilitated the restructuring of TTP, providing a command system, training, and strategic guidance.
