Senior politician and former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Javed Hashmi has been booked in an alleged electricity theft case after the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) accused him of bypassing an electricity meter at his residence. The case was registered through a First Information Report (FIR), and legal proceedings have now begun.
According to the FIR, the case has also been filed against Javed Hashmi’s two sons-in-law, Makhdoom Zahid Bahar Hashmi and Barrister Makhdoom Shahzeb Hashmi. MEPCO has accused all three of involvement in the alleged meter tampering.
The utility company stated that an inspection team from MEPCO’s Makhdoom Rashid Sub-Division, accompanied by officials from the Monitoring and Testing Department, visited Hashmi House on July 17, 2026. During the inspection, officials allegedly found a loop attached to the electricity meter terminals.
According to MEPCO, the loop allowed electricity to be consumed without being properly recorded by the meter. Officials described the alleged tampering as evidence of electricity theft.
The inspection team estimated that the utility suffered a financial loss of approximately Rs249,100 because of the alleged illegal connection. Officials also seized Meter No. 221638, which showed a reading of 22,180 at the time of inspection.
The FIR requests police to register a case under Section 462-J of the Electricity Act and forward a copy to MEPCO for further legal action. Following the inspection, electricity to the residence was disconnected on Saturday evening.
After the FIR was registered, Javed Hashmi strongly rejected the situation by publicly challenging the authorities to arrest him. In a statement shared on X, he said he would not avoid the legal process or seek bail.
He stated that he was at his residence and would neither hide nor leave. He also invited the authorities to arrest him immediately, adding that he would fully face the legal proceedings without applying for pre-arrest or post-arrest bail.
The veteran politician said he was prepared to answer any allegations made against him through the legal system. His remarks quickly gained attention on social media and sparked discussion among political observers.
So far, MEPCO has maintained that its inspection team followed standard procedures during the visit and that the findings were documented before the case was registered. The company has not announced any further administrative action beyond the legal proceedings already initiated.
The matter will now proceed through the legal process, where investigators and the courts will examine the evidence presented by both sides. No court has yet determined the allegations, and the case remains under investigation.
