Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has announced a major water supply disruption as the city prepares to face a shortfall of around 250 million gallons per day (MGD) for 48 hours. The shortage is linked to critical upgrade work at the Dhabeji Pumping Station.
According to officials, the final interconnection of Transmission Line No. 5 will begin on Saturday evening and is expected to be completed within two days. This step is part of ongoing efforts to improve the cityโs aging water infrastructure.
The shutdown will take place from 12 noon on April 25 to April 27 under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project. During this period, water supply from the Fourth Phase, K-II, and K-III systems will remain completely suspended.
Several areas will be heavily affected, including North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, and Gulistan-i-Jauhar, where residents may face complete disruption. Meanwhile, parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Saddar, and Chanesar Town are expected to experience temporary shortages.
To facilitate the work, nine out of 21 pumps at Dhabeji Pumping Station will be shut down. Authorities plan to restore seven pumps by April 27, while two will remain offline for an additional five days for further technical adjustments.
Officials stated that the upgrade will ultimately improve water transmission efficiency and stabilize pressure across the system. Karachi usually receives around 650 MGD of water, but supply is expected to drop to nearly 400 MGD during the maintenance period.
