PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the purchase of 50 additional buses. The move will expand the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit system.
The new fleet will cost Rs4.989 billion, according to officials. The project aims to extend BRT services beyond the current operating route.
The additional buses will help connect several areas with the existing Peshawar BRT network. Officials said the expansion will improve public transport coverage.
Each new vehicle will be 12 meters long. The buses will also use battery-electric technology.
The government plans to operate the new buses on five proposed BRT extension routes. These routes will connect important areas across Peshawar and nearby regions.
Five Routes Proposed for Expansion
The first proposed route will connect Mall of Hayatabad with Jamrud. This route will expand BRT services toward Jamrud.
The second route will run from Pashtakhara to Bara Bazaar. It will operate through Bara Road.
Another proposed route will connect Gulbahar with Dabgari Garden. The expansion also includes a route from Shah Alam Bridge to Naguman.
The fifth proposal involves an extension of the existing Kohat Adda route. These routes are expected to improve connectivity for daily commuters.
The government will also purchase supporting equipment for the expanded service. This includes 15 chargers for the battery-electric fleet.
Intelligent Transport System equipment will also be procured. Other essential accessories will be included in the procurement package.
Earlier BRT Expansion Purchase
Officials said the government has already purchased 52 buses for the BRT expansion. The first phase is already progressing with several vehicles delivered.
Of the 52 buses, 25 have arrived in Peshawar. The remaining 27 buses are expected to arrive soon.
The latest purchase will further increase the size of the Peshawar BRT fleet. Once all vehicles are included, the total fleet will reach 346 buses.
The expansion is expected to strengthen the city’s public transport network. It will also provide more options for passengers traveling between different areas.
The use of battery-electric buses is another major feature of the project. The vehicles are planned for operation on the proposed extension routes.
The additional Buse procurement reflects the provincial government’s plan to broaden BRT coverage. The new routes could bring public transport services to more communities.
Authorities will now proceed with the required procurement and operational arrangements. The project will also require charging infrastructure for the electric fleet.
