Pakistan has started its first biomass energy demonstration plant in Sajawal, Sindh, to promote cleaner energy and support rural communities.

The plant is located in Pinnah Reserved Forest and aims to reduce pollution while protecting natural forest resources.

The project will use agricultural and forest waste to produce sustainable energy. It is also expected to create income opportunities for local communities.

Pakistan Launches New Clean Energy Initiative

Pakistan Launches its first biomass energy demonstration plant under the Promotion and Application of Sustainable Biomass Energy Technologies in Pakistan (PASBET) project.

The initiative is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing the project with Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.

UNDP and the Sindh government jointly inaugurated the new facility.

The plant is the first of four demonstration sites planned under the programme.

These sites will demonstrate how woody biomass can be used to produce cleaner and more sustainable energy.

$3.5 Million Project to Support Rural Communities

PASBET is a five-year project with a total budget of $3.5 million.

The programme will promote sustainable biomass energy technologies across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Its main goal is to provide cleaner energy solutions while improving the lives of people in rural areas.

The project also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit pressure on forests.

By using locally available agricultural waste, communities can produce useful fuel without depending heavily on traditional wood sources.

UNDP Highlights Benefits of Biomass Energy

UNDP Resident Representative Dr Samuel Rizk welcomed the development and highlighted its environmental and economic benefits.

He said Pakistan could meet rural energy needs while protecting its forests.

According to Rizk, the new plant shows how locally available waste materials can become cleaner fuel.

He also stressed the importance of expanding such projects through cooperation between communities, government institutions, and businesses.

How Will the Biomass Plant Help Farmers?

The facility at Pinnah Reserved Forest will demonstrate several ways to use forest and agricultural waste.

These include producing biomass pellets, developing community nurseries, and promoting energy-efficient cooking stoves.

Biomass pellets can be used as fuel for heating and other energy needs.

Efficient cooking stoves can also help reduce fuel consumption and support cleaner cooking practices.

The project is expected to create livelihood opportunities through pellet production and related activities.

It will also support sustainable forest management and help improve local plantations.

Pakistan Launches Efforts to Expand Sustainable Energy

Pakistan Launches this initiative as part of wider efforts to promote environmentally friendly energy solutions.

The demonstration plant will help show how biomass technology can work in rural communities.

The project also aims to encourage the use of renewable resources while reducing dependence on traditional fuels.

With three more demonstration sites planned, the programme could provide useful lessons for expanding biomass energy across Pakistan.
