NDMA Forecasts Rain and Flood Risks During First Week of Muharram

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert for several parts of Pakistan during the first week of Muharram. The authority has warned of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds, hailstorms, and possible flooding in different regions of the country.

According to the latest advisory, a western weather system is expected to affect large parts of Pakistan. The weather pattern may increase the risk of emergencies, particularly in northern and upper areas. Authorities at the federal, provincial, and district levels have been directed to remain alert and take precautionary measures.

The NDMA stated that the forecast is consistent with a seasonal outlook released several months ago. Officials said the early prediction has helped relevant departments prepare for potential weather-related challenges.

Under the forecast, Islamabad and many districts of Punjab are expected to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Similar conditions are likely in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, and northern areas of Sindh. Strong winds and isolated hailstorms may also occur in some locations.

The authority warned that rainfall combined with rising temperatures could create flood-like conditions in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir until June 19. Local administrations have been advised to monitor vulnerable areas closely.

The NDMA also highlighted concerns about rapidly melting glaciers in northern regions. Increased melting may raise water levels in rivers and streams. The authority warned that Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) could occur in several mountainous areas.

According to the alert, Hassanabad, Shisper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, and Shigar are among the locations facing a higher risk of GLOFs. Residents living near rivers and streams in these areas have been advised to stay cautious.

The weather system may also trigger landslides and flash floods in mountainous regions. Overflowing streams could damage roads and disrupt transportation networks. Key communication routes may also face temporary closures if conditions worsen.

Relevant authorities have been instructed to maintain vigilance along highways and in other high-risk locations. Emergency response teams have also been advised to remain prepared for any situation.

The NDMA has urged tourists planning to visit northern areas to check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling. Citizens have also been encouraged to stay informed through the official Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application.
