Severe Cold Wave Alert Issued Across Northern Pakistan, NDMA Advises Caution

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a severe cold wave alert for northern regions and northern Balochistan. Authorities warned of sharply falling temperatures, dense fog, and associated health and travel risks.

According to the NDMA spokesperson, the alert comes from the National Emergency Operation Center. The advisory highlights a prolonged spell of extremely cold weather across Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Pothohar region. Similar harsh conditions are expected in northern Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, and Kalat.

Authorities warned of a significant drop in temperatures in these areas over the coming days. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures to stay warm. The NDMA emphasized that children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions are at higher risk of respiratory illnesses during the cold wave.

The NDMA also warned that extreme cold may damage standing crops, potentially affecting agricultural output in affected areas. Farmers and local authorities have been advised to take protective steps to minimize losses.

In addition to low temperatures, the NDMA issued a fog warning for plain areas. Dense fog is expected, particularly in the early morning hours, reducing visibility on roads. Citizens have been urged to exercise caution while traveling and follow traffic safety guidelines.

The NDMA spokesperson advised the public to stay informed through official weather updates. Citizens were encouraged to take preventive measures to protect their health and livelihoods. Authorities at provincial and district levels have also been asked to remain alert and ready to respond to emergencies arising from the cold wave.

Officials emphasized that the situation may persist for several days. Regular monitoring of the weather update is essential for planning travel, protecting crops, and safeguarding health. NDMA officials reiterated that awareness and preparedness are key to minimizing the impact of this severe cold spell.
