ISLAMABAD: PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar criticized the federal budget 2026-27 during a National Assembly session on Sunday, stating that there is No relief for ordinary citizens despite growing economic challenges.
Speaking during the budget debate, Barrister Gohar said people across the country are already facing financial pressure due to rising living costs. He argued that the new budget does not provide a clear plan to reduce the burden on households.
According to the PTI leader, the government has failed to explain how it intends to lower the prices of essential services and goods. He said the budget lacks a practical mechanism to bring down the costs of electricity, gas, and medicines, which continue to affect millions of people.
Barrister Gohar maintained that there is No relief for families struggling with inflation. He noted that many citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to manage daily expenses as utility bills and healthcare costs remain high.
The PTI chairman also criticized the recent increase in salaries and benefits for lawmakers and ministers. He said members of the National Assembly were granted a 200 percent pay raise, while ministers received a 180 percent increase. He described the decision as inappropriate at a time when many citizens are facing economic hardship.
He argued that government officials would gain greater public trust if they adopted a lifestyle closer to that of ordinary people. According to him, leadership should reflect the realities faced by the public.
During his speech, Barrister Gohar also questioned the government’s broader economic policies. He said the administration has not introduced major structural reforms needed to strengthen the economy. He expressed concern about continued borrowing and claimed that there is no effective strategy to reduce dependence on loans.
The opposition leader further linked the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee and the rise of the US dollar to government policies. He said these developments have added pressure on businesses and consumers alike.
Emphasizing transparency, Barrister Gohar urged the government to share accurate economic figures with the public. He also called for reductions in government expenditures and greater accountability in financial decisions.
Referring to social welfare programs, he stressed the need for transparency and an efficient distribution system within the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). He said public resources should be managed fairly and honestly.
