Pakistan Faces Onion Shortage as Import Hurdles from Afghanistan Persist

Pakistan is likely to face an onion shortage due to import hurdles from neighboring Afghanistan. According to media reports, despite paying all taxes and duties to customs authorities, traders at Chaman are still experiencing difficulties importing onions from Afghanistan.

Traders have reported that customs personnel at Garang Check Post and Shela Bagh Check Post are frequently intercepting trucks loaded with onions and grapes, demanding an additional Rs 5,000 for vehicle clearance.

Traders have appealed to the authorities to address the situation urgently, noting that government intervention could help ensure a smooth supply of onions.

Pakistan is a major importer of Afghan onions and other vegetables and fruits. However, the current uncertain border situation between the two countries is affecting trade. Currently, the retail price of onions in Pakistan is approximately Rs 200 per kg. If imports from Afghanistan remain suspended, prices could potentially double in the near future.

It is worth noting that importing onions and other vegetables from India via the Wagah border would be beneficial for Pakistan. However, due to strained relations between the two nations, this option is not currently viable.
