The PMD has forecast below-normal rainfall across most parts of Pakistan during August. The weather outlook warns that reduced rainfall and higher temperatures could put extra pressure on agriculture and water resources.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, many areas of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan are expected to receive less rain than usual. The forecast also indicates dry conditions in parts of northeastern Punjab, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
However, Gilgit-Baltistan is likely to receive near-normal rainfall during the month. Weather experts said rainfall patterns may vary across different regions, but the overall trend points to a drier-than-average August.
The PMD also expects temperatures to remain above normal in most parts of the country. The hotter weather may increase the risk of heat stress, especially in the plains of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.
Officials warned that lower rainfall could affect Kharif crops, which depend heavily on seasonal rains. Farmers may need additional irrigation to protect crops, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, where water demand is expected to increase.
Despite the overall dry forecast, the department cautioned that heavy rain spells could still occur in some areas. These isolated events may trigger flash floods in hilly regions and urban flooding in cities with poor drainage systems.
The weather outlook also highlights possible environmental hazards in northern Pakistan. Rising temperatures could increase glacier melting, leading to sudden flooding in nearby areas.
The department further warned about the possibility of landslides and avalanches in mountainous regions. Strong winds, dust storms, thunderstorms, and hailstorms may also occur during the month, causing damage to standing crops and property in vulnerable areas.
The PMD advised farmers, local authorities, and emergency response agencies to stay alert and monitor weather updates. Timely planning can help reduce the impact of changing weather conditions on agriculture and public safety.
The department also raised concerns about public health. Dengue cases may continue to increase in urban areas, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and flood-prone locations where stagnant water provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Looking beyond August, the seasonal outlook for August to October also points to below-normal rainfall across much of Pakistan. However, some areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir may receive near-normal to above-normal rainfall during this period.
The forecast further states that above-normal temperatures are expected across the country over the next three months. Experts believe this combination of warmer weather and reduced rainfall could place additional pressure on water supplies, agriculture, and overall environmental conditions.
