President Dr. Arif Alvi has formally requested two consecutive salary increases, according to a national newspaper. Currently earning Rs. 846,550 per month, he aims to raise it to Rs. 1,024,325 from July 1, 2021, and subsequently to Rs. 1,229,190 from July 1, 2023.
The President’s Secretariat conveyed this request through a letter to the Cabinet Secretary earlier this month. The appeal seeks changes to the Fourth Schedule of the President’s Salary Allowances and Privileges (Amendment) Act 2018. The amendments intend to ensure that the president’s compensation surpasses the salary of any public office holder related to Federal matters.

Reportedly, the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s salary has been increased twice in the last two years via Presidential Orders. However, the president’s salary has remained unchanged. The presidency argues that this disparity warrants a revision to the Fourth Schedule.
The Law Ministry, after being referred the matter by the Cabinet Division, recommended the salary increase on August 18. They clarified that the Federal Government has the authority to modify the Fourth Schedule through an official gazette notification. The Finance Division also supported the proposed raise on August 22.
The proposal is awaiting cabinet approval. If sanctioned, the president would not only receive the suggested raises but also receive arrears for the period from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2023.
