LAHORE: The Punjab govt has approved the establishment of the Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan. The project is estimated to cost more than Rs8.7 billion.
According to official documents, the hospital is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2029. The project aims to improve access to specialised cancer treatment in southern Punjab.
The new facility will provide modern medical services to cancer patients in Dera Ghazi Khan and nearby areas. It is also expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to other cities for treatment.
Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital Project Details
The approved project includes separate allocations for construction and operational expenses. According to official documents, the capital component exceeds Rs3.12 billion.
Meanwhile, the revenue component is estimated at more than Rs5.58 billion. These funds will support different requirements associated with establishing and operating the hospital.
The Punjab govt plans to expand specialised healthcare services through this project. The hospital will help improve access to cancer diagnosis and treatment for residents of the region.
Cancer patients often require specialised medical facilities and long-term care. Establishing a dedicated hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan could make these services more accessible to local communities.
The project also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the province’s healthcare infrastructure. However, the hospital’s services and operational arrangements will depend on further implementation.
Cancer Treatment Facilities Expanding in Punjab
The provincial government is also working on another major cancer treatment project in Lahore. Secretary Health Azmat Mahmood said work was underway on the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research.
The institute is another part of the province’s plans to expand specialised cancer care. The project is expected to support the availability of dedicated treatment and research facilities in Lahore.
Together, these initiatives aim to improve access to specialised healthcare across different parts of Punjab. The Dera Ghazi Khan hospital will serve patients in southern Punjab, while the Lahore project will strengthen facilities in the provincial capital.
Punjab Introduces Merit-Based System for Foreign Medical Graduates
Separately, the Punjab Health Department has decided to introduce a transparent, merit-based system for foreign medical graduates.
The system will cover house jobs and postgraduate training opportunities. The department has formed a nine-member committee to review the existing procedures.
The committee includes vice-chancellors of medical universities and principals of medical colleges across Punjab. Its primary responsibility will be to recommend improvements to the current induction process.
The committee will focus on merit, transparency and uniformity in selection procedures. It will also examine how medical degrees, registrations and licences are verified.
Additionally, the committee will review eligibility requirements for foreign medical graduates seeking training opportunities. These measures aim to establish a consistent process for evaluating applications.
The healthcare initiatives cover both patient services and medical training. While the cancer hospital project focuses on specialised treatment, the proposed merit-based system addresses professional training opportunities.
