LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a landmark initiative to establish cardiac cath labs in every district of the province. The move aims to provide advanced heart care at district hospitals, making life-saving treatment accessible to all citizens.
The first phase of the project will see cardiac cath labs becoming operational in Jhang, Mianwali, and Vehari at district headquarters (DHQ) hospitals. In the second phase, facilities will be launched in Bhakkar, Chakwal, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Mandi Bahauddin, Rajanpur, and Toba Tek Singh. This expansion ensures that no district is left without access to critical cardiac care.
Each cardiac cath lab will offer angiography, angioplasty, and primary PCI services. CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that these facilities will allow timely treatment for heart attack patients. She highlighted that reaching a cath lab within 60 to 90 minutes of a heart attack can be life-saving.
The chief minister also noted that with district-level cardiac centres, patients will no longer have to travel to major cities during emergencies. Her goal is to ensure that patients can reach a district cardiology centre within nine minutes in case of a heart attack.
To support the initiative, the CM has directed authorities to appoint specialist cardiac doctors at each DHQ hospital. A special pay package has also been approved to attract and retain skilled professionals for the cardiac cath labs.
CM Maryam Nawaz stated that the labs will provide world-class treatment in line with international standard operating procedures (SOPs). She added that the project will reduce the burden on major hospitals while improving emergency response and overall healthcare in Punjab.
“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to high-quality cardiac care at their doorstep,” she said. The establishment of cardiac cath labs in all districts is being hailed as a historic step toward modernizing healthcare infrastructure across Punjab.
