Punjab Approves Motorcycle Driving Licences for 16-Year-Olds Across the Province

Punjab government has approved a major change to its licensing policy by lowering the minimum age requirement for obtaining a motorcycle licence to 16 years. The decision is expected to benefit thousands of young riders across the province.

According to official reports, the provincial cabinet has approved the proposal. Following the approval, the Home Department has forwarded the recommendations to the Law Department for the issuance of a formal gazette notification.

Authorities expect the notification to be issued after the completion of legal formalities. Once the notification is published, the new policy will come into effect across Punjab.

Under the revised rules, individuals aged 16 years will be eligible to apply for motorcycle licences. However, the permission will be limited to motorcycles only. Licence holders under this category will also be allowed to carry only one passenger while riding.

Officials have clarified that the new policy does not allow teenagers to operate commercial vehicles. The newly approved Driving Licences will not permit holders to drive rickshaws or any other vehicle used for commercial purposes.

The government has also emphasized that all applicants must complete the required legal procedures before receiving a licence. Candidates will be required to pass the prescribed tests and meet all eligibility conditions set by the authorities.

The Home Department has already submitted the approved summary to the Law Department for final notification. Once the process is completed, eligible applicants will be able to apply under the new age criteria.

The decision is being viewed as a significant change in Punjab’s transport and licensing regulations. Supporters of the move believe it will provide legal driving opportunities to younger motorcycle users who are already using two-wheelers for education and daily travel.

Officials have stressed that road safety requirements will remain unchanged. Applicants must still demonstrate driving skills and knowledge of traffic rules before obtaining Driving Licences.

The new policy is expected to encourage legal compliance among young riders while ensuring they receive proper training before using public roads. Authorities hope the revised system will improve road discipline and promote responsible driving habits.
