Punjab University ASA Condemns Stand On Proposed Salary Cuts

Punjab University ASA Condemns Stand On Proposed Salary Cuts

The Academic Staff Association (ASA) at the University of the Punjab has strongly criticized its leadership over recent internal disagreements. The issue centers on proposed salary cuts and administrative decisions affecting faculty members.

The Executive Council met on April 24 under the chairmanship of Prof Dr Abdul Rehman Niazi. The meeting reviewed tensions that emerged during an earlier session with university administration. Prof Dr Kamran Abid supervised the proceedings.

Members were informed about a recent meeting between ASA representatives and the vice chancellor. During that meeting, faculty concerns were raised over delayed implementation of demands. Discussions also included proposed salary cuts and changes to conveyance allowances.

According to council members, the delegation stressed that any salary cuts must be approved through proper statutory bodies. These include the Finance and Planning Committee and the university syndicate. They insisted that no decision should bypass official procedures.

However, the council expressed concern over ASA President Dr Amjad Abbas Khan Magsi. He was accused of supporting the administrationโ€™s stance on the issue of salary cuts. This position reportedly differed from the collective view of the delegation.

The council noted that the meeting with the vice chancellor became tense. Still, it remained within acceptable limits without major disruption. However, disagreements continued within the association afterward.

On April 23, the Executive Council meeting saw a majority rejecting the presidentโ€™s position. Members criticized the approach and warned it could weaken efforts to oppose salary cuts. The discussion became heated but was eventually brought under control.

The council also expressed regret over inappropriate language used during internal exchanges. It emphasized the need for discipline and unity within the association.

In its resolution, the council strongly condemned divisive behavior. It stated that the presidentโ€™s stance had negatively affected progress on faculty demands, especially regarding salary cuts and benefit reductions.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting teachersโ€™ rights. It clearly stated that any salary cuts or benefit reductions must follow proper approval channels.

A formal censure resolution was passed against the president. The council also decided to hold a general body meeting soon. The matter will be presented before the wider teaching community for further discussion.

The ASA confirmed it will continue its efforts with unity and responsibility. It reiterated its opposition to any unilateral decisions on salary cuts without due process.
