CHITRAL: A local hunter, Jamil Ahmed, successfully hunted a rare Himalayan ibex in Upper Chitral, featuring impressive 40-inch horns. The hunt took place in the rugged terrain of Arkari Valley during the current trophy hunting season.
According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department, Ahmed shot the ibex from about 160 meters under the supervision of wildlife authorities. The hunt was conducted legally under the provinceโs regulated trophy hunting program.
Himalayan ibex are considered rare wild mountain goats in northern Pakistan. They are offered for limited trophy hunts to promote community-based conservation and sustainable wildlife management. Officials noted that part of the hunting fees is used to support local welfare projects and wildlife protection efforts.
The trophy hunting season in the Hindukush and Karakoram ranges allows both local and international hunters to participate. Strict regulations ensure the protection and long-term survival of rare species like the ibex. Wildlife authorities emphasized that sustainable hunting programs benefit both the communities and conservation of these rare animals.
โThis legal hunting program helps protect rare species while providing economic benefits to local communities,โ a KP Wildlife official said. He added that monitoring and regulation are key to preventing overhunting.
