KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) constitutional bench has summoned copies of the Sindh Cabinet’s arrest orders and related documents regarding the detention of PTI workers under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
The court also issued notices to the Advocate General of Sindh and other concerned parties, summoning their replies. Families of detained PTI workers were allowed to meet their relatives after over 40 applications were filed in court.
The hearing has been adjourned until February 10. The court directed that copies of its orders be delivered to the Advocate General Sindh, IG Sindh, and the superintendents of Malir and Central Jail.
The arrests were challenged by PTI on Monday, with the party filing petitions at the SHC constitutional bench. A total of 180 party workers were reportedly arrested under the MPO, according to the Sindh home department.
Justice Nisar Bhanbhro instructed the court to fix the petitions as per the roster on February 3. The home department detailed that the arrests included 51 persons from Karachi East, 30 from Karachi West, 24 from Central District, 23 from Keamari, 22 from Korangi, 10 from Karachi South, 9 from Malir, and 11 from the city district.
The home department stated that the arrests were made to prevent disruption of law and order and to protect public life and property. Arrested PTI workers were reportedly shifted to Malir Jail for 30 days.
PTI’s legal team claimed that the arrests occurred over the previous Saturday and Sunday night. They added that the crackdown caused panic among families, describing the operation as a targeted effort against PTI workers in the city.
