Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho has proposed the formation of a medical board to address the controversy surrounding the post-mortem examination of businessman Raza Ali. The proposal comes after concerns were raised about the findings of the original post-mortem report.
The development follows objections made by Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed. In a letter sent to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East, she identified 14 alleged flaws in the post-mortem examination. She also recommended that the body should be re-examined to clarify the medical findings.
Speaking to the media during a visit to the Karachi Bar Association, IG Javed Alam Odho acknowledged that there was confusion in the Raza Ali case. He said some statements made about the case did not match the available medico-legal documents.
The IG said that if there were genuine concerns, a medical board could be formed without any objection from the police. He added that independent medical experts should review the evidence and determine the facts. According to him, the police investigation would continue based on the findings of the medical board.
The proposal aims to remove doubts about the post-mortem report and ensure that the investigation remains transparent. Officials believe an independent review could help resolve the questions raised about the medical examination.
Earlier, Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Karachi Azad Khan rejected the observations made by Dr. Samia Syed. He stated that the post-mortem report had been prepared by the concerned Medico-Legal Officer (MLO), not by the police.
Dr. Samia had questioned whether the medical findings matched the photographs of Raza Ali‘s body. She suggested that the observations recorded in the report appeared inconsistent with the available images.
Responding to these concerns, Azad Khan said the police surgeon had based her opinion on photographs instead of personally examining the body. He emphasized that post-mortem reports are prepared by Medico-Legal Officers, while the police only conduct investigations using the medical findings provided to them.
He also said the police surgeon should have submitted her observations through the proper official channels instead of discussing the matter publicly. According to him, following official procedures is important to avoid confusion during sensitive investigations.
Azad Khan further stated that if the family of Raza Ali requests it, the authorities could exhume the body for a fresh post-mortem examination. He said such a step would be taken according to legal procedures and relevant regulations.
