Authorities have arrested six people, including government officials and a contractor, in connection with alleged Corruption in a model village development project in Toba Tek Singh. The action was taken after a surprise inspection reportedly found the use of substandard construction materials and possible financial irregularities.
The arrests followed an inspection ordered by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The visit was carried out by a team led by her Special Assistant, Shoaib Mirza, to review the quality of ongoing construction work at the project site.
According to officials, the inspection found that low-quality materials were allegedly being used in the project. Laboratory testing of construction materials reportedly showed that they did not meet the required quality standards. These findings led to a formal investigation into the alleged Corruption and project management practices.
Following the inspection, the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) launched an operation and arrested six individuals linked to the project. Those taken into custody include PRMSC Faisalabad Division Coordinator Hafiz Talat Mahmood, contractor Amir Nadeem, Muhammad Irfan, Site Inspector Muhammad Irfan Munir, Site Inspector Umair Asghar, and Surveyor Umer Sufyan Qadir.
Officials said the investigation is focused on whether public funds were misused during the construction process. Authorities are also reviewing project records, financial documents, and construction procedures to determine the full extent of the alleged violations.
Deputy Director Anti-Corruption Faisalabad Muhammad Sarfraz Warraich said preliminary findings indicate that the suspected irregularities may have caused an estimated loss of Rs. 75.9 million to the national exchequer. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence before reaching any final conclusions.
The allegations have not been proven in court. The arrested individuals have not been convicted of any offence, and no public statements from the suspects or their legal representatives were immediately available following the arrests.
Officials stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. The Anti-Corruption Establishment is expected to examine additional records and question more individuals connected to the project if necessary.
The arrests come shortly after the Punjab government ordered a broader inquiry into beautification projects and Punjab Development Programme schemes worth billions of rupees in Toba Tek Singh. That inquiry aims to review the transparency, implementation, and use of public funds across multiple development projects.
Authorities said the wider investigation will assess whether project guidelines were followed and whether taxpayers’ money was spent according to approved standards. Officials also plan to examine procurement procedures, quality control measures, and financial management practices.
The latest Corruption investigation reflects the Punjab government’s stated focus on improving accountability in public development projects. Officials say strict action will be taken if evidence confirms financial misconduct or the use of substandard construction materials.
