Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has officially withdrawn his legal action against Sri Lanka Cricket. The case against the board was related to the denial of a No-Objection Certificate for IPL participation.
The dispute began when Sri Lanka Cricket refused to issue clearance for Thushara. He was set to join Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the 2026 Indian Premier League. The board cited failure to meet updated fitness standards.
Thushara had initially filed a case against Sri Lanka Cricket at the Colombo District Court. He challenged the decision and argued that the new rules were unfair. The matter gained attention in local sports media.
According to reports, Thushara later decided not to continue the legal proceedings. He informed the court that he wished to withdraw the petition. Much of the IPL season had already progressed by that time.
Before withdrawing the case, Thushara also submitted a written apology to Sri Lanka Cricket. This move indicated an effort to resolve the matter peacefully.
Officials confirmed that the case against Sri Lanka Cricket was formally dismissed on April 23. The court accepted the withdrawal without further proceedings.
The disagreement originally started after Sri Lanka Cricket introduced stricter fitness requirements. Under these rules, Thushara was considered ineligible for selection until he met the standards.
In his original petition, Thushara claimed his fitness level had remained consistent. He stated that he had previously been allowed to compete under similar conditions. He also argued that the new policy affected his career opportunities.
The legal filing was made on April 2 during a court holiday period. It was later discussed again on April 9, when Sri Lanka Cricket indicated it would contest the case against the player.
However, the matter did not proceed further after withdrawal. The court officially closed the case following his decision.
Thushara is a right-arm fast bowler who has played 30 T20 internationals for Sri Lanka. He previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2024. He later joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the 2025 season.
The resolution of the case against Sri Lanka Cricket brings an end to the dispute. However, questions remain about how the new fitness policies will affect future player selections.
Cricket officials are expected to continue enforcing updated standards. Meanwhile, players may need to adjust to stricter requirements going forward.
