Apple to Expand RCS Support in iOS 26.4, Modernizing Messages App

Apple is preparing a major update to its Messages app with iOS 26.4, expected this spring. The update aims to modernize text messaging for iPhone users.

The new iOS version will expand Appleโ€™s support for RCS (Rich Communication Services). This technology is designed to replace traditional SMS, offering features similar to popular messaging apps like WhatsApp.

RCS allows high-quality media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and reliable message delivery over Wi-Fi or mobile networks. Appleโ€™s integration of RCS will bridge the gap between iPhone and Android messaging. Users will no longer face the old โ€œgreen bubbleโ€ SMS experience.

Apple emphasized that privacy remains a priority. โ€œEnd-to-end encryption is a powerful privacy and security technology that iMessage has supported since the beginning,โ€ Apple said. The company added that RCS Universal Profile will now also support end-to-end encryption. This ensures encrypted chats between iPhone and Android users.

iOS 26.4 also introduces functional improvements missing in earlier RCS versions. Users can expect inline replies, message editing, unsending, and richer reactions. These features aim to bring Appleโ€™s messaging experience on par with competitors.

Beta builds of iOS 26.4 show that Apple is actively collaborating with mobile carriers to ensure smooth RCS rollout. Analysts say this move could significantly improve cross-platform communication for millions of users.

By modernizing its Messages app and integrating RCS, Apple is addressing long-standing frustrations with SMS limitations. The update reflects the companyโ€™s focus on privacy, usability, and compatibility with Android devices.

The iOS 26.4 rollout is expected to mark one of the most significant updates to Appleโ€™s Messages app in years, providing a richer, encrypted, and cross-platform chat experience for iPhone users.
