Apple Unveils Liquid Glass Interface, Marking a New Chapter in Software Design

At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple introduced a major visual overhaul across its operating systems, calling the new look ‘Liquid Glass.’ Inspired by the Vision Pro spatial computing headset, this redesign represents Apple’s most significant aesthetic shift since the move from skeuomorphism to flat design in iOS 7.

Apple’s Vice President of Design, Alan Dye, showcased how Liquid Glass brings a translucent, glass-like interface that dynamically interacts with user touch, ambient lighting, and movement. The redesign spans all Apple platforms — including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26 — creating a unified experience from iPhones to Apple Watches and Apple TV.

The update features multi-layered app icons, a glassy San Francisco typeface for the Lock Screen, and fluid motion effects for notifications and menus. Notably, the system can now transform standard 2D photos into immersive 3D spatial scenes, enhancing user interaction, especially when combined with Apple’s spatial computing technology.

While no new hardware was announced, the Liquid Glass design hints at Apple’s future ambitions in augmented reality and spatial computing. Public beta releases are expected this summer, with a full rollout planned for the fall.
