Construction Begins on World's First 3D-Printed Hotel in Texas

El Cosmico, a unique hotel and campground in Marfa, Texas, is breaking new ground by constructing the world’s first 3D-printed hotel. This project is a collaboration between 3D printing company ICON and architects from the Bjarke Ingels Group.

The development will include 43 hotel units and 18 residential homes, spread over 60 acres. The design and construction use ICON’s advanced Vulcan printer and a proprietary cement mixture called Lavacrete. This technology enables creative and sustainable architecture that traditional building methods can’t match.

El Cosmico’s owner, Liz Lambert, highlighted the freedom 3D printing allows in design, making complex curves and shapes possible at a lower cost. The flexibility of this method is unlike any she has worked with before.

Set for completion by 2026, the hotel will offer rooms priced between $200 and $450 per night. The project showcases how 3D printing technology could transform the future of hospitality and construction in challenging environments.

The initiative also highlights the broader potential of 3D printing in the construction industry, offering innovative solutions but also raising concerns about its impact on skilled labor in remote areas.
