Mozilla Firefox Introduces AI Control Features in Latest Update

Mozilla has announced that the upcoming Firefox 148 update will allow users to block all AI features in the browser. The change reflects the companyโ€™s focus on user choice in the age of artificial intelligence.

Rolling out on February 24, Firefox 148 introduces a new โ€œAI controlsโ€ section in desktop settings. The main option is a global โ€œBlock AI enhancementsโ€ toggle. When enabled, it disables all AI tools, pop-ups, and reminders within the browser.

For users seeking more control, the update allows selective management. Features such as local AI translations, PDF alt-text generation, or tab grouping can be individually enabled or disabled. The AI chatbot in the sidebar, which supports services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini, can also be managed separately.

Mozilla emphasized that these changes respond to user demand for optional AI integration. โ€œAI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it,โ€ the company said in a blog post. โ€œWeโ€™ve heard from many who want nothing to do with AI.โ€

The update aligns with Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeoโ€™s vision that AI should always be a choice. He previously stated that users must understand how features work and have the option to turn them off if desired.

This move positions Firefox as a competitor against AI-native browsers such as Arc and Perplexity. Mozilla is also emphasizing ethical technology by supporting startups promoting AI transparency. President Mark Surman announced plans to allocate $1.4 billion in reserves to back these initiatives.

By giving users control over AI tools, Firefox strengthens its commitment to privacy, choice, and ethical standards. The update aims to balance innovation with user autonomy, allowing people to decide how AI interacts with their browsing experience.

Experts suggest this feature could attract users who prefer a less AI-driven internet while maintaining the benefits of optional tools. Mozillaโ€™s approach highlights the growing importance of responsible AI integration in consumer software.
