Google Docs Introduces Audio Summaries Powered by Gemini

February 16, 2026 โ€“ Google is enhancing Google Docs with a new โ€œAudio Summariesโ€ feature, powered by its Gemini AI. The update allows paid Workspace users to listen to podcast-style recaps of their documents instead of reading them.

The feature, rolled out on February 12, appears under Tools > Audio > Listen to Document Summary. When activated, Gemini scans the documentโ€™s content across multiple tabs and generates a spoken summary, usually under three minutes. This differs from standard screen readers, which read text word-for-word. Googleโ€™s new tool synthesizes information, highlighting key points in a natural, conversational tone.

Users can choose from different personas, including a neutral โ€œNarrator,โ€ an energetic โ€œPersuader,โ€ or a supportive โ€œCoach.โ€ A built-in media player lets users pause, rewind, and adjust playback speed from 0.5x to 2x. The feature generates summaries based on core ideas, turning ordinary documents into concise, digestible audio.

Currently, Google limits access to paid subscribers. Eligible plans include Google AI Pro and Ultra tiers, Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and accounts with Google AI for Education or Business add-ons. Free personal Google accounts cannot use the feature at this time. Google has described the rollout as โ€œextended,โ€ meaning it may take longer than the usual 15 days to reach all users.

Professionals managing long reports and students reviewing extensive notes can benefit from listening to summaries while commuting or multitasking. Googleโ€™s new Audio Summaries make reading documents faster, easier, and more engaging, effectively transforming static text into a personalized audio experience.
