A new snake species found in the Peruvian Andes has been named after actor Harrison Ford, known for his portrayal of Indiana Jones, who famously encountered snakes in the movie series. Collaborating researchers from Germany, the US, and Peru have dubbed the snake “Tachymenoides harrisonfordi” to honor Ford’s environmental advocacy. Measuring 16 inches in length, the new snake specie features a yellowish-brown hue with scattered black blotches, a black belly, and a copper-colored eye with a vertical streak.

Ford, 81, humorously remarked, “These scientists keep naming critters after me, but it’s always the ones that terrify children.” He expressed his gratitude for the recognition and the broader importance of the discovery. Reflecting on the fragile state of the planet’s biodiversity, Ford stated, “We have an existential mandate to mend our broken relationship with nature and protect the places that sustain life.”

The New snake specie was uncovered in May 2022 by a research team at a marsh in the Peruvian Andes, situated 3,248 meters above sea level. This solitary male specimen inspired the naming, highlighting the intertwined fate of Earth’s species. Ford’s association with this new snake species not only pays homage to his iconic film character but also raises awareness about the urgent need to preserve biodiversity and address the challenges faced by countless species on the brink of extinction.
