OpenAI Robotics Head Resigns Over Pentagon Deal Concerns

Caitlin Kalinowski, head of robotics and consumer hardware at OpenAI, resigned on Saturday. She cited concerns about the company’s agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense.

In posts on X, Kalinowski said OpenAI did not spend enough time reviewing the deal before deploying its AI models on Pentagon cloud networks. She warned that surveillance without judicial oversight and autonomous weapons without human control are serious issues.

“AI plays an important role in national security,” she wrote. “But these lines deserve careful consideration before any agreement.” Kalinowski added she has “deep respect” for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the team, but the Pentagon deal was announced “without proper guardrails.”

OpenAI responded that the deal includes safeguards to limit the use of its AI technology. The company stressed that its “red lines” prevent its models from being used in domestic surveillance or lethal autonomous weapons.

“We understand people have strong views on these issues,” OpenAI said. “We will continue engaging with employees, government, civil society, and communities worldwide.”

Kalinowski joined OpenAI in 2024 after leading augmented reality hardware development at Meta Platforms. Her resignation highlights ongoing debates about ethical oversight and governance in AI projects.

Experts say the resignation reflects broader concerns over how AI technologies are deployed in sensitive government operations. OpenAI has consistently emphasized safety and responsible use, but employees like Kalinowski stress the need for extra deliberation in defense-related agreements.

This development comes as AI applications expand rapidly in both civilian and military areas. OpenAI continues to face scrutiny over how its models may be used, even with safeguards in place. Kalinowski’s resignation underscores the importance of clear rules and oversight for AI partnerships with government agencies.
