The UAE is constructing the world's largest waste-to-energy plant in Dubai.

The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, has unveiled a breakthrough renewable energy plant in Dubai with an investment of AED 4 billion ($1.09 billion).

The Warsan project aims to be the world’s largest and most efficient waste-to-energy hub. It would provide 220 megawatt hours of renewable energy, enough to power approximately 135,000 homes. The factory would also treat a huge 2 million tonnes of garbage each year while minimising environmental damage.

Sheikh Hamdan extended his gratitude to the project’s teams in a tweet, writing, “We congratulate the exceptional teams involved in this unique project.” We are dedicated to utilising breakthrough technology to create a brighter, more sustainable future.”

The project is currently in its operational phase and will be completed next year. The declaration comes on the heels of the UAE’s pledge to invest up to AED 200 billion in the renewable energy sector.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, announced that the Cabinet had approved a revised national energy strategy that will quadruple renewable energy’s contribution over the next seven years. The investment is critical to meeting the country’s rapidly growing energy consumption.

Sheikh Mohammed also announced the approval of a national hydrogen plan. The policy would position the UAE as a producer of low-emission hydrogen, an important source of clean energy.
