WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could make it much easier for users to know when their contacts are actively using the app. The messaging platform is introducing a live green dot indicator that appears next to a user’s profile picture, showing they are online in real time.
The feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.26.10.72. If the user is actively using the app, a small green circle appears at the bottom-right corner of their profile photo. The indicator automatically disappears when they leave the application.
The update represents a change from the app’s traditional “Last Seen” feature. Until now, users could only see the last recorded time someone was active. That feature often leaves people unsure whether a contact is currently available to reply.
The new live indicator is designed to remove that uncertainty. Instead of relying on past activity, users will be able to tell if someone is online before sending a message. This could make conversations quicker and improve real-time communication.
According to the reported beta version, the green dot is currently visible only from a contact’s information page. It does not yet appear in the main chat list where users spend most of their time.
Technology observers believe Meta could expand the feature before its public release. If that happens, users may be able to see the green dot directly from the chat screen without opening a contact’s profile.
The latest addition brings WhatsApp closer to several competing messaging platforms. Apps such as Apple’s iMessage, Instagram Direct Messages, Telegram, Signal, Slack, and Discord already offer live online presence indicators.
Over the years, WhatsApp has evolved from a simple text messaging application into one of the world’s largest communication platforms. With billions of users worldwide, the company continues introducing new features to improve the overall user experience and remain competitive.
Despite the convenience of the new indicator, some users have raised privacy concerns. Many worry that showing real-time activity could reduce personal privacy or increase pressure to respond immediately.
However, WhatsApp has stated that the feature will respect existing privacy settings. Users who have already chosen to hide their online status will not display the green dot. This means the feature will not override any privacy preferences that users have previously selected.
If rolled out globally, the live online indicator could offer several practical benefits. Friends and family members could quickly know the best time to start a conversation. Businesses and workplaces may also benefit from faster communication with customers and colleagues.
The feature could also reduce confusion over delayed replies by helping users understand whether a contact is online or simply away from the app.
The green dot indicator is only one of several new features currently under development. WhatsApp is also testing usernames, view-once text messages, and additional privacy controls for Meta AI interactions.

Although the feature remains in the testing phase, it reflects WhatsApp’s continued focus on modernizing the platform. If released publicly, the live green dot could become another useful tool for making conversations faster, smoother, and more responsive while maintaining user privacy.
