YouTube is gearing up to integrate Google’s powerful AI video generator, Veo 3, into its Shorts platform later this summer. The announcement, made by CEO Neal Mohan at Cannes Lions 2025, marks a bold move to bring text-to-video creation directly to everyday users.
Veo 3 allows creators to generate complete short-form videos — visuals and audio — using just a few lines of text. Mohan hailed it as a way to empower anyone to become a storyteller, calling it a game-changer for digital content creation. The tool builds on Google’s earlier Dream Screen feature but takes things further by generating full videos instead of just AI backgrounds.

While the feature promises to lower the barriers to content creation, it’s also sparking concern among creators. Some critics worry about the rise of low-effort, AI-generated content flooding the platform — dubbed “AI slop” — and its effect on originality, misinformation, and creator sustainability.
To address these concerns, YouTube is developing a likeness protection tool in partnership with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), aimed at shielding public figures from unauthorized AI usage. Meanwhile, advertisers may see Veo 3 as a cost-effective way to generate branded videos — though increased automation could make it harder for campaigns to stand out.
