AMD Shows Off New AI Chips at CES as It Pushes to Challenge Nvidia

Advanced Micro Devices took the stage at CES in Las Vegas on Monday to highlight its latest technology. During the event, AMD shows off several new artificial intelligence chips aimed at data centers, businesses, and AI-powered computers.

AMD CEO Lisa Su presented the company’s advanced MI455 AI processors. These chips are designed for large data center server racks. They are already being sold to major clients, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI. The processors are built to handle heavy AI workloads and large-scale computing tasks.

At the same event, AMD shows off another important product called the MI440X. This chip belongs to the MI400 series and is made for on-premise use. It targets businesses that do not have specialized AI infrastructure. AMD said the MI440X can fit into existing systems more easily than other AI chips. A similar version of this chip is planned for use in a future U.S. supercomputer.

AMD is widely seen as Nvidia’s strongest competitor in AI chips. However, analysts say AMD still lags behind the market leader. Nvidia continues to sell every AI chip it produces. Despite this, AMD gained attention in October after signing a major deal with OpenAI. The agreement was seen as a strong vote of confidence in AMD’s hardware and software.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman joined Lisa Su on stage. He said continued chip innovation is critical for OpenAI’s growing computing needs. AMD executives expect the OpenAI partnership to generate significant new revenue over time.

Looking ahead, AMD shows off an early preview of its MI500 processor. Su said the chip could deliver up to 1,000 times more performance than older versions. AMD plans to launch the MI500 chips in 2027.

The event also featured robotics technology. Daniele Pucci, CEO of Italian firm Generative Bionics, unveiled GENE.01, a humanoid robot. Pucci said the first commercial version would be manufactured in the second half of 2026.

Earlier the same day, Nvidia introduced its next-generation Vera Rubin platform. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the platform is already in full production. It is expected to launch later this year.

AMD also announced Ryzen AI 400 Series processors for AI-powered PCs. The company launched Ryzen AI Max+ chips for local AI tasks and gaming. Meanwhile, Intel revealed its Panther Lake chips, which are set to become available for orders this week.
