Study Finds Intensive Childcare Can Affect Grandparents’ Mental Health

Study Finds Intensive Childcare Can Affect Grandparents’ Mental Health

Grandparents often describe their grandchildren as a source of joy, but new research shows regular childcare may carry risks. A recent study found that elderly grandparents who frequently care for young grandchildren face a higher risk of depression.

In many families, grandparents provide crucial support, helping parents work longer hours and maintain financial stability. According to Age UK, around five million grandparents in Britain regularly look after their grandchildren. Nearly 90 percent provide care at least once a week, while one in ten does so daily, sometimes for five years or more.

Caring for grandchildren has clear benefits. Age UK reports that involvement can help grandparents stay active, reduce loneliness, and bring emotional satisfaction. For many, spending time with grandchildren adds structure and strengthens social connections in later life.

However, the recent study by psychologists at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran reveals that intensive caregiving can be challenging. The research surveyed over 400 elderly couples about their childcare routines and mental health.

Findings published in BMC Psychology indicate that grandparents aged 50–60 did not face a higher risk of depression. But for those over 60, frequent childcare—especially for children under six—significantly increased the likelihood of low mood and persistent sadness.

Researchers noted that childcare for young children is physically demanding and time-consuming. Constant supervision, playtime, and emotional attention can drain older adults’ energy. Financial stress also contributes, as many grandparents live on limited retirement income and may face additional expenses.

While grandparents’ involvement remains vital, the study emphasizes that intensive caregiving can become emotionally and physically taxing. Mental health outcomes depend on age, personal health, workload, and financial circumstances.

Experts suggest families should balance grandparental support with the seniors’ well-being, ensuring they can enjoy grandchildren without undue stress. The research highlights that while grandchildren bring joy, the role of a grandparent must be managed carefully.
