Israel Steps Up Attacks on Lebanon, 40 Dead Including Children

Israel

Israeli strikes in Lebanon over the past day have killed at least 40 people, including children, as the conflict with Hezbollah escalates. Lebanese authorities reported on Saturday that heavy bombardment targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs overnight, along with other regions across the country.

Seven people, including two children, died in Tyre on Friday night, Lebanon’s health ministry reported. Rescue teams continue to search for bodies, and DNA testing is underway for body parts retrieved. In nearby towns, strikes on Saturday killed 13 people, including seven medics from Hezbollah- and Amal-affiliated rescue groups.

Another 20 people died in attacks on the Baalbek plains, an area with significant Hezbollah presence. The Israeli military confirmed it targeted Hezbollah sites in Tyre and Baalbek, striking operational bases and weapons stores.

Since October 2023, Israel has been locked in an intensifying conflict with Hezbollah. Lebanese health ministry data indicates that, over the past year, 3,136 people have been killed in Lebanon, including 619 women and 194 children, with nearly 14,000 injured.

Israeli bombardment has severely damaged Beirut’s southern suburbs, Hezbollah’s stronghold. Many buildings are now in ruins, and residents have been seen picking through debris, trying to salvage belongings.

The escalation shows no signs of abating as both sides continue daily exchanges of airstrikes and rocket attacks.
