Saudi Arabia has announced a new plan to improve worker safety and health across the country. The Kingdom will introduce mandatory occupational fitness assessments and non-communicable disease screenings for workers in all sectors.
The new system will be introduced in phases. It aims to make sure every worker is physically fit for their Job before starting work.
According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, the first phase will focus on new job applicants. These workers must complete medical screenings before joining any workplace. Their examination reports must be reviewed by an occupational medicine specialist.
No employee will be allowed to start a Job until their medical results are approved.
The second and third phases will expand the plan. Existing workers will also be included later. High-risk workplaces will be checked first. After that, all sectors and professions will be covered.
The new rules will apply to public, private, and non-profit sectors. Permanent employees will be included. Temporary and seasonal workers will also be part of the program. Trainees, remote workers, and people with disabilities will also be covered.
Officials said the plan is designed to protect workers and improve workplace safety. It will also help identify health risks early.
If a worker fails the occupational fitness test, they may not continue in the same Job. In such cases, employers must take action. This may include changing the workerโs role or assigning a different profession.
Workers will have the right to take further medical tests. These tests can help prove they are fit for duty.
The ministry also said health assessments may be needed after workplace injuries. They may also be required after occupational illnesses or when workers change their work environment.
