TOKYO โ Japan has issued a special advisory after renewed concerns over a major seismic event. Authorities warned of a higher risk of a powerful earthquake following strong tremors in the countryโs north.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday. The tremor was strong enough to be felt in Tokyo, located hundreds of kilometres away. Buildings shook across the capital during the quake.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that the chance of a larger earthquake is now higher than usual. Officials warned that a magnitude 8.0 or stronger earthquake cannot be ruled out.
A tsunami warning was also issued after the quake. Authorities said waves of up to three metres could occur in coastal areas. Residents were advised to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
Japan has a long history of major seismic activity. The country still remembers the devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake in 2011. That disaster triggered a tsunami and nuclear meltdown at Fukushima.
Around 18,500 people were killed or went missing during the 2011 disaster. It remains one of the worst natural disasters in Japanโs history.
In 2024, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a rare advisory warning of a possible โmegaquake.โ This referred to a potential large earthquake along the Nankai Trough.
The Nankai Trough is an underwater fault zone stretching about 800 kilometres. It is located where the Philippine Sea plate slowly moves beneath Japanโs landmass.
Experts have warned that a major earthquake in this region could be extremely destructive. Government estimates suggest up to 298,000 deaths and massive economic losses.
Earlier advisories also caused public panic. People rushed to buy supplies, and many travelers cancelled hotel bookings due to fear of another earthquake.
A second advisory was issued in December 2025 after another strong tremor off northern Japan. That earthquake triggered small tsunami waves and caused minor injuries but limited damage.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely. Officials say preparation and early warnings remain key to reducing the impact of future earthquake events in Japan.
