Kuwait has announced strict regulations on energy drinks, banning their sale in restaurants, schools, and government offices. The decision also introduces age limits and consumption restrictions.
The countryโs Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmed Abdulwahab Al Awadhi, issued a ministerial decision to regulate the sale and circulation of energy drinks. The new rules aim to protect public health by limiting access and reducing potential health risks.
Under the regulations, energy drinks may only be sold to individuals aged 18 and above. Daily consumption is capped at two cans per person, and each can must not exceed 80 milligrams of caffeine per 250 millilitres.
Producers and importers are now required to display clear health warnings on all packaging. Additionally, all forms of commercial advertising and sponsorship for energy drinks are strictly prohibited.
The regulations extend to all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, as well as government offices. Restaurants, cafรฉs, grocery stores, food trucks, and vending machines are also banned from selling these products. Online ordering platforms and delivery services cannot sell or deliver energy drinks either.
Sales are allowed only through cooperative societies and parallel markets, and even there, energy drinks can be sold only in designated areas. Authorities emphasize that these measures aim to limit consumption among minors and protect public health.
Health experts have welcomed the decision, saying that controlling access and raising awareness about caffeine content can prevent health problems such as heart issues, high blood pressure, and sleep disturbances.
The new regulations reflect Kuwaitโs broader approach to public health and safety. Officials have stressed that the measures will be strictly enforced, with penalties for violations to ensure compliance.
With these measures, Kuwait becomes one of the few countries in the region to implement comprehensive restrictions on energy drinks, prioritizing health over unrestricted availability.
