Man Frozen Body Found in US Cave Identified After 47 Years

After nearly 50 years, the man whose frozen body was found in a Pennsylvania cave in 1977 has been identified as 27-year-old Nicholas Paul Grubb from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, according to News.

The Berks County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of the so-called “Pinnacle Man” thanks to a Pennsylvania state trooper’s diligent work in matching fingerprints to Grubb’s.

The remains were discovered in a cave beneath the Pinnacle, a popular hiking destination in Albany Township, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia. This discovery concludes a nearly five-decade-long mystery that saw numerous failed attempts to identify the body. In 2019, efforts to extract DNA from the exhumed body also proved unsuccessful.

The coroner’s office reported that the initial post-mortem examination determined Grubb died from a drug overdose, with no signs of foul play. Although dental records and fingerprints were collected at the time, a match was not found until August of this year, when Grubb’s fingerprints were entered into NamUs, a national missing persons database. The FBI then identified him within an hour.

John Fielding, the Berks County Coroner, stated in a news conference, “This identification brings a long-awaited resolution to his family.”

He added, “These moments underscore the importance of our work to provide answers, bring closure, and assign a name and a story to those who were once unidentified,” as reported by The New York Times.

Grubb, affectionately known as “Nicky” by his family, had served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1971. The coroner’s office noted that his family was “deeply grateful” for the efforts made to identify him.

Despite this significant development, officials acknowledged that there are still unanswered questions about Grubb’s final days, and the investigation continues.
