Manchester Police Face Criticism For Assaulting a British-Pakistani Family

A Greater Manchester Police officer was recorded kicking and stamping on the head of a Pakistani man at Manchester Airport.

In the video, the officer is seen holding a Taser over the man, who is lying face down, before striking him twice while other officers instruct onlookers to stay back.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) stated that firearms officers had been attacked while attempting to make an arrest following a fight in Terminal 2 on Tuesday. GMP has referred the incident to the police watchdog.

MP Naz Shah expressed her deep concern over the viral footage, calling for a thorough and immediate investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The video has sparked outrage, leading to a protest by several hundred members of the Pakistani community outside the police station in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The protesters condemned the alleged police brutality and demanded justice from British authorities.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) previously announced that an officer involved in the incident at Manchester Airport has been removed from operational duties. GMP has referred the case to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

Assistant Chief Constable Chaudhry acknowledged the widespread shock and concern caused by the video of the incident, stating that such use of force during an arrest is highly unusual. He confirmed that one male officer has been taken off active duty and the police response has been voluntarily referred to the IOPC.

Manchester Mayor’s Stance

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham described the video as “disturbing” and noted the deep concern it has generated. He has discussed these concerns with GMP’s deputy chief constable.

Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson also commented on the incident, expressing awareness of the disturbing footage and public concern. She has requested a full update from GMP.
