Muslim Scholars Demand Transparent Bangladeshi Elections After Premier’s Departure

A group of Muslim scholars has called on the Bangladesh Army to safeguard the nation and ensure transparent elections. The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) made this appeal following the resignation and escape of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India amid intense student protests over job quotas.

The IUMS expressed support for the Bangladeshi people and urged the military to establish an interim civilian government until fair elections can be conducted. They also emphasized the need for public order and protection of state and private property amidst the chaos.

Protesters have reportedly set fire to government buildings and the Awami League party headquarters in Dhaka. In response to the situation, military chief Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman announced a transitional government after Hasina’s departure.

Since early July, Bangladesh has experienced widespread protests, initially sparked by university students opposing the job quota system. Local reports indicate approximately 400 deaths related to the unrest.
