Nick Hague:
Nick Hague, a serving colonel in the US Space Force, brings a wealth of experience to the SpaceX Crew-9 mission. Originally from Belleville, Kansas, Hague has a background in astronautical engineering and served in various roles with the US Air Force before joining NASA in 2013. This will be his second visit to the ISS and his third spaceflight overall. His previous missions include a dramatic in-flight abort during a Soyuz launch in 2018 and a successful six-month stay on the ISS during Expeditions 59 and 60.
While aboard the ISS, Hague completed three spacewalks, playing a crucial role in maintaining and upgrading the station’s systems. His extensive experience, including his work on the Boeing Starliner Program and his expertise in space station operations, makes him exceptionally well-suited to lead this mission. Hague will serve as the commander for the expedition.
Aleksandr Gorbunov:
Aleksandr Gorbunov, a cosmonaut with Roscosmos, will make his space debut on the Crew-9 mission. Hailing from the Kursk region of Russia, Gorbunov has an engineering background with a focus on spacecraft and upper stages. Before becoming a cosmonaut in 2018, he worked as an engineer at Rocket Space Corp. Energia, where he contributed to launch operations at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
Although this will be his first spaceflight, Gorbunov’s engineering skills and extensive training have well-prepared him for the mission. As a mission expert, he will play a crucial role in technical operations aboard the ISS and as a member of the Expedition 72 crew. His contributions will be essential for the mission’s success and the safe return of the crew.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore Rescue Mission
The SpaceX Crew-9 mission is set to launch no earlier than September 6, 2024, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This mission is notable for carrying only two crew members instead of the initially planned four. This change was made to ensure the safe return of Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been aboard the ISS since June 2024.
Williams and Wilmore were originally scheduled to return to Earth on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. However, due to technical problems with the Starliner, including helium leaks and malfunctioning thrusters, the plan was altered. NASA decided to return the Starliner uncrewed and instead use the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft to bring Williams and Wilmore back.
Sunita Williams, with over 322 days in space, has been a key figure in NASA’s space missions. Her return signifies the conclusion of another significant phase in her distinguished career, which includes two long-duration stays on the ISS and seven spacewalks totaling over 50 hours.
The mission will include scientific experiments, space maintenance tasks, and possibly some spacewalks. The crew is expected to spend several months on the ISS before returning to Earth in February 2025.
