Talks to Deweaponize Kurram Deadlocked, Road Closures Persist

Kurram

Efforts to resolve the deadlock over deweaponizing Kurram district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa reached an impasse during a grand jirga on Saturday. The jirga, led by Kohat Division Commissioner Moatasim Billah Shah at Kohat Fort, failed to reach an agreement on surrendering heavy weapons to tribal elders—a condition set by authorities to open the district’s roads.

The failure to finalize the peace agreement was attributed to a lack of attendance from some jirga members. While both parties agreed on several aspects, they disagreed on a key clause requiring the surrender of heavy weapons. One party proposed that the weapons be handed over to the government instead.

The authorities emphasized that without the surrender of weapons, the roads would remain closed, prolonging the deadlock. Meanwhile, a helicopter service has been initiated to deliver medicines and supplies to the district, and over 16,000 patients have been treated at the Parachinar DHQ Hospital since December 13.

In protest, citizens in Bagan have blocked roads, and a sit-in continues in Parachinar despite the severe cold.
