Tehran Signals Support for Lebanon-led Ceasefire Efforts in Israel Conflict

Israel

Iran has expressed its support for Lebanon’s efforts to broker a ceasefire with Israel, as the country faces intensified Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah-controlled areas. Ali Larijani, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, indicated Iran’s backing for any resolution Lebanon might achieve, reinforcing Tehran’s commitment to its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah.

Larijani’s statement came during a visit to Beirut, amid ongoing diplomatic attempts, particularly from the United States, to secure a ceasefire. The U.S. has presented a draft truce proposal to Lebanon’s parliament, led by Nabih Berri, who is backed by Hezbollah. The proposal aims to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has escalated after almost a year of hostilities tied to the Gaza war.

The situation remains volatile, with Israeli airstrikes continuing in southern Beirut, causing heavy destruction. The humanitarian crisis has worsened, with over a million people displaced in Lebanon. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with the Lebanese health ministry reporting over 3,386 deaths from Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, Tehran’s support for Lebanon’s negotiation process signals a potential shift towards de-escalation, but key challenges remain, including Israel’s demand for the right to act if Hezbollah violates any truce agreement.
