Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Issues First Statement Addressing French Allegations

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov recently addressed French judicial charges, defending his platform against accusations of enabling criminal activities. In a Telegram post, Durov discussed his detainment at Le Bourget airport and the legal issues he faces after posting a 5 million euro bail.

Durov criticized the use of outdated laws against modern technology, arguing that innovators cannot be held responsible for the misuse of their tools. He emphasized the difficulty of building technology, warning that holding creators accountable would stifle innovation.

While detained, Durov was informed of his personal liability for illegal activities on Telegram, which he found surprising given that the platform has a designated representative in the EU for handling legal matters. He noted the established communication channels for EU authorities to address such issues.

Durov highlighted his previous cooperation with French officials in combating terrorism and expressed his commitment to continued dialogue. He stressed that legal actions should target the platform, not individuals, in cases involving internet services.
