US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a new pressure strategy against Iran amid rising tensions over its nuclear program. The plan focuses on an Extended Blockade aimed at limiting Iranโs economic activity.
According to officials, the proposed Extended Blockade would target Iranโs oil exports and shipping routes. The goal is to restrict trade flowing in and out of Iranian ports. This could significantly reduce the countryโs revenue and increase pressure on its leadership.
Sources said Trump shared these directives during a Situation Room meeting. He reviewed different options before choosing economic pressure as the main approach. Military action and de-escalation were both considered but seen as riskier alternatives.
The Extended Blockade plan is designed as a long-term strategy. It aims to force Iran into making concessions on its nuclear ambitions. Trump believes this approach could be effective without immediate military conflict.
The current tensions follow a major escalation earlier this year. On February 28, a joint offensive by the United States and Israel targeted Iranian interests. In response, Iran launched strikes against what it called US-linked targets in the region.
These retaliatory actions affected several Gulf states. The situation raised fears of a wider regional conflict. A ceasefire was later reached on April 8 through mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
Following the ceasefire, talks were held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. However, the negotiations ended without any agreement. Diplomatic efforts have since struggled to make progress.
Trump later stated that the ceasefire was extended at Pakistanโs request. This was done to allow time for Iran to present a new proposal. However, recent developments suggest limited optimism for a breakthrough.
Iranโs latest offer included reopening the Strait of Hormuz. It also suggested delaying detailed nuclear discussions. Trump reportedly remains skeptical of this proposal.
As tensions continue, the Extended Blockade remains under consideration. Officials say it could reshape the economic and political dynamics in the region if implemented.
